How do you clean a roof without damaging it?
The safe method is soft washing. The crew applies a cleaning solution that kills the growth, lets it sit, then rinses with low-pressure water. We do not use a hard jet on shingles or tile. High pressure can strip the protective granules from asphalt shingles, crack tile and push water under the roof covering. This is why we stay with soft washing for roofs.
Different roofs get different care:
- Asphalt shingles. Low pressure only, with careful rinsing so water does not go up under the tabs.
- Concrete or clay tile. Cleaned with low pressure, and the crew avoids stepping on weak spots where tiles can crack.
- Metal roofs. Rinsed and treated, with care around seams and fasteners.
Soft washing does not repair damage. If you have missing shingles or cracked tiles, a roofer should look at it.
